There are several moral issues  that have a great impact on the social fabric of our state and our country.

  • First, we are ever vigilant about First Amendment issues of freedom of religion, association, and speech.  There are forces at work in our state that would thwart our liberties and limit the free spread of the Gospel.
  • Sanctity of life is another item of deep concern.  New Mexico legalized abortion before Roe v. Wade, and the New Mexico Right to Life Committee predated the National Right to Life Committee.  The disregard for the well being of the unborn is deeply entrenched in our state, but that is no reason to stop praying and working to end this sad state of affairs.
  • Gambling is an economic and moral blight on our state.  We must do all we can to stop its spread and even roll back its negative impact.
  • Drugs and alcohol continue to destroy individuals and families.  Ultimately the answer to substance abuse is spiritual, but legal policy can make that task easier or more difficult.
  • We are concerned about crime and its impact on our culture.

However, right now everyone is locked in a struggle over one issue - the definition of marriage and the concept of a family unit as one man and one woman united in a sacred covenant called marriage.

Traditional marriage is the most positive antidote to the problems we have listed above.  It goes without saying that one of the greatest contributions of Christianity to the world has been the undergirding of this most basic, God ordained, institution.  As incredible as it sounds marriage is under attack.  Right now that concern rises to the top of the list.  If we lose the comcept of a traditional home and values, we have lost the best solution for a stable moral society. These issues are bipartisan and transdenominational.  Each of these touches on the ultimate value of human life.  Striving to make life morally better is the highest goal of Christian citizenship.
